Colorado Fire Fighters Pledge $1.2 Million to MDA

During 2017 Fill the Boot Campaign

DENVER, Colorado, August 29, 2017 — Mayor Michael B. Hancock along with the Colorado
Professional Fire Fighters (CPFF) are showing their support for the Muscular Dystrophy
Association (MDA) as its members kick-off the annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign to help
kids and adults with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle-debilitating diseases live
    longer and grow stronger.
Continuing a more than 60 year tradition, 6,000 dedicated fire fighters across Colorado
will hit the streets and storefronts with boots in hand asking pedestrians, motorists, customers
and other passersby to make a donation to MDA from September 1 through September 4.
This year, Colorado fire fighters pledge to raise 1.2 million dollars to provide support and
services to local children and adults effected by muscular dystrophy, ALS and other muscle-
    debilitating diseases.
Fire fighters, alongside MDA and National and State Representatives, will kick-off this
year’s Fill the Boot campaign with a press conference at the Colorado State Capitol building’s
West Steps on August 29, from 9AM to 10AM.
“Over the years, many of these local fire fighters have become my friends and it’s
obvious their hearts are in the right place,” said MDA National Ambassador and longtime Fort
Collins resident, Joe Akmakjian. “With four breakthrough treatments receiving FDA approval in
the last year, there has never been a more important time to continue fighting for the individuals
and families we serve. MDA wouldn’t be anywhere near where we are today without the
unwavering support of partners like the fire fighters.”
Fill the Boot contributions help fund groundbreaking research that has resulted in four
drug therapies for people living with three of MDA’s most common diseases; Duchenne
Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

(ALS). This is the first time in history a treatment for SMA has been approved and the first time
in more than 20 years a treatment for ALS has hit the market.
Fill the Boot provides MDA the funds to implement life-enhancing programs such as
support groups and Care Centers, located at Children’s Hospital Colorado and University of
Colorado Hospital in Aurora. Funds raised also assist in sending 100 local kids and teens to
“the best week of the year” at MDA Summer Camp at Rocky Mountain Village Easterseals– all
at no cost to their families.
    About MDA
MDA is leading the fight to free individuals — and the families who love them — from the
harm of muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle-debilitating diseases that take away
physical strength, independence and life. We use our collective strength to help kids and adults
live longer and grow stronger by finding research breakthroughs across diseases; caring for
individuals from day one; and empowering families with services and support in hometowns
    across America.
